ifakara

A rural town in south central Tanzania

Ifakara is a small town in rural southern Tanzania. Ifakara is a trading centre, and lies on the edge of the flood plain of the Kilombero River. The town is the headquarters of Kilombero District area, and the surrounding area is known for fishing and for rice farming. Ifakara is the base for several health and health research organisations, including Ifakara Health Institute (www.ihi.or.tz); the referral hospital of St Francis (http://www.stfrancisreferralhospital.or.tz/); the St Francis University College of Health and Allied Sciences (sfuchas.ac.tz); and for the Tanzanian Training Centre for International Health (www.ttcih.ac.tz). The name Ifakara is derived from the Ndamba language and dates from the late 1800s.
