ifakara orphanage
a refuge for children
The orphanage was started in XXXX by a Tanzanian business man who made a small building available for the housing of orphans; however, he knew he needed help with the care of the children. He approached the Sisters of St. Francis asking for at least one Sister to help run the orphanage. With the help of the Sisters of St. Francis, the orphanage has been run for over xx years and today there are xxx children who call it home.
The business man was able to provide the building, but it needed a lot of updates and the sisters were lacking in funds. They reached out to Sr. Maria-Paula, the Matron of the Nazareti Leprosy Centre to help since they had recently completed a building project. While working with the Sisters at the orphanage, Sr. Maria-Paula realized the children needed more food and she knew we might be able to help with the Free Bread Funds. Of course, we could not say "No", and since 2002 the children daily receive freshly baked bread and twice a month they also receive tea and sugar. The money for this is sent to Sr. Maria-Paula who in turn pays the bakery.
